There is nothing better than seeing the success of our former Vulcan Students! Meet Margaret Arnold (Bently), a 2000 graduate of VHS. Margaret attended Michigan State University, where she received a degree in English. Margaret has been employed with Auburn University for the past 11 years, where she is the Senior Director of Advancement for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. Her team is responsible for raising $30M-$40M a year to support students, faculty, and programs in the college. The team's work makes college available for students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college – which changes lives and family trajectories! I am so grateful to the teachers at Vassar who helped me to get scholarships to MSU and who helped me to tour MSU’s campus. Those four years at MSU changed my life, and my student job there led me to a career that has been very meaningful and impactful. Do you know a Vassar graduate with a great story we could share? If so, please send their contact information, a short blurb, and a recent picture to Stacy Esterline at sesterline@vassar.k12.mi.us

Nic Messing from the Michigan Department of Treasury - Northern MI Outreach Analyst - MI Student Aid visited Mr. Morrison's JMG and Mrs. Torrez's Careers classes on Monday! Students were able to pick a career and conduct a budget-based activity. This activity required them to make economic decisions in order to keep their budget in the positive. To help the students make these decisions they were allowed to visit 14 poster boards. Each poster board was a different category of payments they would have to make. A few examples of the categories were credit cards, child care, groceries, transportation, etc. The students had to decide whether to be frugal, moderate, or elaborate in their choices. Each level had a different price associated with it, with frugal being the cheapest option and elaborate being the most expensive. Once they visited all 14 poster boards they then budgeted their checking account register to see if they had any money left over. If they didn’t, they were required to re-visit poster boards and rethink some of their choices to have money left over. It was a great day of learning those life skills here at Vassar High School!
